These days, being an “environmentalist” seems a little out of
fashion. At Fresh Energy, we believe that it’s not just about
spotted owls, national parks or wilderness protection. It’s also
about enjoying – and protecting – special places right around our
homes.
In the Midwest, we are fortunate to be close to
still-majestic forests, open prairies and clear lakes. We treasure
our natural resources, and we want to preserve them for our own
pleasure while leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.
What’s more, we want vital neighborhoods, easy access to work and
leisure opportunities, and better urban environments.
In short: A world where we all can live, work,
and play the way we deserve to.
The Rising Problem
Global warming – caused in large part by the way energy is produced
– directly impacts the health of the environment, putting all that
we value at serious risk.
-
Temperatures are rising, and many
ecosystems will not be able to tolerate the heat.
-
The rate of warming is also an issue: It is
happening too fast for many ecosystems to adapt to.
-
Destruction of ecosystems leads to a loss
of biodiversity; the less diverse an ecosystem, the less it can
withstand stress.
-
The loss of even a single species makes the
entire system less stable, with potentially catastrophic
results.
-
Melting ice can cause sea levels to rise
with disastrous consequences for coastal cities.
Preserving and Protecting
Fresh Energy’s goal is to realize an energy system that causes no
pollution. An energy system in harmony with the environment. One
that uses resources wisely and responsibly. And one that reflects
Midwesterners’ love and respect for our parks, prairies, forests,
and waters – for our sake and beyond.
Fresh Energy. Working for a 21st century energy system that
supports the health of our economies, our people, and our
environment while moving us toward energy independence.
