Support global warming solutions in Minnesota!
Tips for writing letters to legislators:
- Use the correct address and salutation
(Dear Senator ____,
or Dear Representative ____).
Send letters to their Senate or House offices in St. Paul. (Not
sure who represents you? Find out with the Minnesota
District Finder.)
- Describe the bill by popular name and by
House or Senate file number, if possible.
- Urge your legislators to support strong
legislation that would (1)
reduce global warming emissions 80 percent by 2050 in
Minnesota and (2) not make the situation worse while we work
to make it better, and do so in your first sentence.
Letters should be no longer than one page.
- Be specific. If possible, give an example of the global
warming issue affects you or your community:
- For example, you might describe that you heard Will
Steger speak at your church, and/or that you watched
and discussed An Inconvenient
Truth.
- Other examples might include any concerns you have
about the future of Minnesota and your children/grandchildren.
- Know your facts. Inaccurate or misleading
information will hurt your credibility.
- Refer to www.cleanenergyminnesota.org
if you have any questions, or contact J. Drake Hamilton,
hamilton@fresh-energy.org 651-726-7562.
- Be timely.
- Be polite in your requests for support.
Never express anger, make demands, or threaten defeat
at the next election. You want to have future contact
with the legislator.
- Use your own
words and stationary rather than form letters or postcards
if possible. In addition, write legibly or type—your
letter could be discarded if it is not easy to read.
- Send a note of appreciation when your legislator supports
your issue. When he or she does not support your issue, explain
why you think a different decision should have been made. It
might make a difference the next time.
