Fresh Energy Added to the Minnesota State Fair
Fresh Energy, a St. Paul-based nonprofit policy organization, will promote clean energy in two capacities at the fair.

St. Paul, Minn. – Fresh Energy, best known for its advocacy at the Capitol, will team up with Renewable Energy Systems Americas Inc. (RES) at the Minnesota State Fair to demonstrate its support for clean energy in an unorthodox fashion. Throughout the course of the fair Aug. 23 – Sept. 3, Fresh Energy staff and volunteers will generate electricity on stationary bikes for news broadcasts, in addition to the staff of both Fresh Energy and RES providing presentations about wind energy in Minnesota.

“Most folks don’t think about where their power comes from,” said Ruth Patton, Communications Director of Fresh Energy. “You flip the switch, and the lights turn on. Fresh Energy has found that when people hear about the benefits of clean, renewable energy, they support it, and they want more available in the state.”

During the fair, Fresh Energy staff and volunteers will generate power for four half-hour news segments on WCCO-TV (CBS). They will pedal on power-generating stationary bikes, and WCCO will harness the electricity and use it to power its newscasts.

Fresh Energy staff and volunteers will bike at 5 p.m. on Aug. 23, Aug. 25, Aug. 30 and Sept. 1 at the WCCO booth at 1741 Carnes Ave.

In addition to Fresh Energy and RES, WCCO lists Batteries Plus, Erik’s Bike Shop, Parsons Electric and Visual Impact as additional sponsors of the bike-powered broadcast.

Fresh Energy and RES staff will give six half-hour presentations to fairgoers. The public can hear how Minnesota is a leader in the nation with wind energy, and they will learn more about what kind of a role wind farms play in the fight against global warming.

Presentations will take place at 4:15 p.m. Aug. 23, Aug. 27, Aug. 28, Aug. 29 and Sept. 3. There will also be an 11:15-presentation on Aug. 27. Presentations, too, will be next to the WCCO booth at 1741 Carnes Ave.
