Senators Amy Klobuchar and Norm Coleman are co-sponsors of an important new global warming bill.

SENATE GETS SERIOUS ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING
Minnesota Senators co-sponsor new bill

A bill introduced October 18 by Senators John Warner (R-Va) and Joe Lieberman (D-Conn) would significantly reduce global warming pollution in the United States. The bill, America’s Climate Security Act of 2007, would reduce greenhouse gases from the largest sources by 15 percent by 2020 and 70 percent by 2050. Both of Minnesota's U.S. Senators—Amy Klobuchar (D) and Norm Coleman (R)—are co-sponsors of the bill.

Included in the bill are provisions that would establish a cap and trade system for the power, industrial, and transportation sectors and strengthen energy efficiency standards for appliances and buildings.

The proposed legislation, however, falls short of the 80 percent reductions scientists understand will be needed to avoid the worst impacts of global warming. Fresh Energy will be working to make the bill strong enough to meet our climate challenge. Review the bill text, fact sheets, and senators’ statements regarding the legislation

Show your support for this legislation by calling Senators Klobuchar (202-224-3244) and Coleman (202-224-5641) to thank them for supporting America's Climate Security Act of 2007 .

Dow Chemical urges the U.S. to take world leadership in the fight against global warming.

CAP AND TRADE MAKES HEADLINES
Business calls for U.S. leadership on global warming

On October 1, U.S. chemical giant Dow Chemical called for worldwide action to fight global warming—an “international framework” with the flexibility to accommodate different countries or regions. Dow specifically stated that "the big contributing countries"—the U.S., Europe, China, and India—must be engaged in the effort.

Dow is part of the United States Climate Action Partnership, a group of more than 27 major companies urging Congress to enact legislation to cut global warming emissions 80 percent by 2050.

There has been talk in Washington about imposing tariffs on countries that do not implement a cap and trade policy. A Dow spokesperson advised the United States to commit first to its own cap and trade policy, saying, “I think the U.S. should worry about showing leadership first and then worry about penalties later.” Read more at Reuters.
